           Mahatma Gandhi is remembered in the world for his preaching of four major good qualities. They are non-violence, truth, love and fraternity. Led the freedom movement by practicing these qualities. He is called the Father of the nation. Mahatma Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. His father was an officer in charge of the province. His mother's name was Putlibai. He was married to Kasturba Gandhi when he was in high school.

Young Mohandas was much influenced by King Harishchandra when he saw a play based on the life of that king. After he finished his schooling, he went to England to study law In 1893 he came back to India and started his career as a lawyer. He always supported the poor and truthful clients. Later he went to South Africa. In South Africa, Gandhiji faced many hurdles. He fought against racial discrimination when he noticed that British were ill treating the native Africans and Indians in South Africa. He himself was insulted on a number of occasions. He propagated Satyagraha there. After Gandhiji's return to India, he came to be associated with the Indian Nation Congress and soon became an important leader. His aim in life was to fight for the rights of his countrymen in their own country. He was a firm believer of non-violence and always insisted on a peaceful struggle for freedom. Gandhiji did a lot to improve the condition of women and the weaker sections of the society. His efforts to free India from the British rule led him to jail several times. In the end India won freedom on the 15th of August 1947. Gandhiji was loved and respected by everyone. He was affectionately called Bapu by his followers. Gandhiji was a religious man. He never missed his prayers and always preached brotherhood amongst the countrymen. He was assassinated on the 30th January 1948. His samadhi is in New Delhi and is visited by many people.
